Recommendations to make the most of your onboarding training
Our onboarding training program is designed to help you get started with JSTOR Stewardship and to support you in achieving your institutional goals.
These recommendations are based on what we’ve learned working with our participants. They are not hard-and-fast rules, but should hopefully help you think about what would be the most impactful use of your training time.
Establish goals for training
Starting with one or two goals, such as uploading a particular collection or covering a specific process, gives us something to anchor your trainings around. It can also give you a head start on work that you want to do.
For example, if you have a collection you know you want in JSTOR Stewardship, we can create a project and upload part of, or even the entire collection together during your training. Then you can continue to work with that project after your training.
Identify key workflows
Do you have collections you’d like to publish to JSTOR or Omeka? Will you be using JSTOR Stewardship along with another service like ArchivesSpace? Do you prefer to edit in the system or use spreadsheets to manage your metadata?
Whether you have materials ready to be uploaded or not, consider which workflows will be important for you to meet your goals. For example:
- If you plan to publish to JSTOR or preserve in Portico, we can prioritize setting up those workflows for when you're ready to upload.
- If you plan to export your metadata to use in a different system, we can cover editing and exporting options.
If you’re not sure yet what you’ll need, tell us what you’d like to be able to accomplish, and we can help you identify the best workflows to support that work.
Discuss internally before you begin – especially if you have a large team or multiple teams sharing Stewardship
We know that in some cases, an institution has multiple stakeholders or different teams working with JSTOR Stewardship in different capacities.
Prior to your first training, we recommend discussing your goals and key workflows internally. We can tailor one or more training sessions to different groups. For example, if you have student workers, you can designate one training specific for their needs.
Consider:
- What are your highest priorities for training?
- Who needs to attend onboarding training? Do they need to be present in every session?
- Do different groups need trainings tailored to their work?
Tell us what you’re trying to accomplish
Prior to your training session, we'll share an agenda with you. We encourage you to review the agenda and let us know if you’d like to add or change anything, so we can be sure your training meets your needs.
If you aren’t sure what you need to know or where to start, that's also okay. Tell us what you want to accomplish with JSTOR Stewardship, and we can show you how to best accomplish that outcome.
Ask us questions
During sessions, don’t hesitate to speak up if you have questions, need more clarity on something, or think of something you’d like to go over instead.
Also, you don't have to wait until the training to ask questions. You can reach out at any time – we’re here to support you.
Take advantage of all of our resources
We have a wide library of on-demand resources available to you. In addition to our support site documentation, we have recorded webinars and video tutorials available.
We offer two ongoing webinar series:
- A monthly training series for the JSTOR Stewardship DAM that cycles through three topics: Advanced Features, Project Administration, and Project Cataloging.
- A quarterly training series for JSTOR Seeklight that covers an introduction to the tool and advanced applications.
